My great-grandfather, Duncan Macfarlane, spent four years in the service of Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, later Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Although I cannot yet be certain of the exact dates, family records suggest he left Sir Henry’s employment when he married my great-grandmother in 1902.
In March 1948, Duncan received this letter from the High School of Glasgow. The school was preparing a special edition of its magazine to mark one hundred years since Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman had become one of its pupils.
Since Duncan had spent four years in Sir Henry’s service, the Magazine Committee asked him to provide a personal perspective on the man behind the statesman. The committee took the 3:15pm bus to Sandfield, Milngavie to record 79 year old Duncan’s recollections. These later were published alongside contributions from others, including Field Marshal Jan Smuts. The article below is the result of that visit.
