Scottish Junior Cup Final

My Dad loved his football. He played as a schoolboy, as a Scout, in the army, and later as a Junior. His love of the game was something I shared growing up, and we often went to matches together, supporting “our” team, Montrose FC.

If I’m honest, although I loved the football, the time we spent together was even more precious 💕

When Dad spoke about his many football memories, it was 1950 that he always considered the pinnacle of his playing career.

He wrote “The highlight of my footballing career was in 1950 when I was playing for Cumnock Juniors and we reached the final of the Scottish Junior Cup. This was played at Hampden Park, Glasgow on Saturday 20th May again Blantyre Victoria. There was a crowd of over 49, 000 in Hampden that day, junior football being a much bigger thing at that time than it is today. Unfortunately we lost the match 3 – 0.”

Dad received an engraved runners’ up medal posted on a few months after the game. He was so proud of it, and rightly so!

Dad also recalled that “On May 19th 1979 Cumnock Juniors again reached the final and I, along with the other team members from 1950 were invited to attend. Jane came to the match with me and we watched the team win 1 – 0. Margaret [my Mum] came to the evening dinner with me later and I must say I was fair chuffed when someone spotted me as I got out the car and said “there’s Andy Duncan”.”
