Wedding of Jimmy Baird and Jean Macfarlane

On Saturday 5 September 1931 my Gran, Jean Weir Macfarlane married my Grandpa, James Barr Baird at St Luke’s Church, Milngavie. The wedding was described as “fashionable”

Gran was the only child of Duncan Macfarlane and Agnes Grey. Grandpa was the third son of William Baird and Agnes Thomson. Sadly, neither of them survived to witness the happy day.

Gran lived at Sandfield in Mugdock Road, Milngavie and this photo shows her in the garden at Sandfield before she left to get married.

The wedding was celebrated by the Rev. J. W Coutts, M.A. Leslie Slight was the best man and cousin Jean Wallace was the bridesmaid.

After the ceremony the couple walked out of the church to a guard of honour formed by Gran’s fellow Red Cross nurses in recognition of her service with the Milngavie branch of the Dumbartonshire Voluntary Aid Detachment.

The Milngavie Brass Band played the wedding party to the reception. Grandpa did not play in the band but he was the treasurer.

The Milngavie Herald reported that Gran wore a “dress of silk chenille georgette with sprays of apple blossom” together with an embroidered net veil made by her aunt. She carried a bouquet of pink roses. Bridesmaid, Jean, wore a pink shaded dress with frills and carried sweet peas.

After the reception the bride and bridegroom left on a motoring tour to the south of England, with the bride travelling in a mulberry tweed suit and a black bowler hat!
