Henry Thomson (1799 -1873)

My great great great grandfather was Henry Thomson. He was born in Kilsyth in 1799, the youngest child to Robert Thomson and Agnes Hay.

Sadly, I have no information on Henry’s early life but he appears with his family, wife, Agnes Hamilton, and their children living in Chapelhall in the 1841 census. He remains in Chapelhall for the remainder of his life. Henry is recorded as being a labourer in 1841. By 1851 he appears to be working in the local Iron and Steel works as an “iron stock taker”. In 1861 he is an “iron weigher of minerals” and by 1871 he appears to be working as a “watcher” on the railway.

Tragedy falls on the family in 1873 when Henry dies suddenly. According to an article in the Falkirk Herald, Henry had been walking home to Chapelhall from Airdrie after attending the church service there when he “fell down senseless”. Despite medical attention being sought he did not recover and death was pronounced.
