Angus, Ruth and I enjoyed a lovely walk around the Waterworks on New Year’s Day 2026. We stopped at Craigholm for a photo. My great grandmother, Agnes Gray, was born there in 1871, the daughter of Andrew Gray and Jean Weir of Barrachan.
My mum used to tell us that she had only ever lived in 2 houses in her life, the house she was born in and the house she moved to when she married my dad. The same was true of her mother and, likely, also her grandmother.
My gran, Jean Macfarlane, was born at Sandfield, Mugdock Road, Milngavie, and moved to Clober Road when she married my grandpa, Jimmie Baird.
Her mother, Agnes Gray, was born at Craigholm and moved to Sandfield on her marriage to Duncan Macfarlane.
Agnes’s mother, Jean Weir, was born at nearby Barrachan and moved to Craigholm on her marriage to Andrew Gray.

Craigholm is a house on the east side of Mugdock Reservoir, built in the early 1870s as part of the Milngavie Waterworks development. Documentary evidence shows it was constructed in 1871–72 from professionally prepared plans and specifications.
